Meet First Baptist Church Elkhart

First Baptist Church was founded in downtown Elkhart in 1860 with a small group of believers. After several years at their first location, they moved to a location south of downtown. Today, FBC Elkhart is located on 40 acres of land on the northeast side of Elkhart and occupies an 85,000 sq ft facility. 

FBC Elkhart is very evangelistic and outreach-oriented in its approach to the community and exists to glorify God by equipping believers to love God, love people, and influence the world with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. They have two contemporary services on Sunday mornings, which are both offered through Livestream each week. Currently averaging 1400 attendees between both services, their mission continues to be “Worship, Walk & Work.”.

About the Worship Pastor

The Worship Pastor will oversee all facets of the worship and music at First Baptist Church of Elkhart. They will provide vision and direction to the worship ministry while working with volunteers in their development, training, and equipping of skill and music leadership. In addition, the Worship Pastor will carry out this role as a member of the pastoral team, work directly with the Executive Pastor of Ministries, lead the worship department staff, and empower God’s people to fulfill the mission of the church.  

The Worship Pastor’s responsibilities include:

Serves the Pastoral Staff:

  • Plans and coordinates the worship sets and worship events
  • Recruits, enlists, trains, and mentors all worship ministry teams
  • Oversees the interview, audition process, and placement of worship ministry volunteers into serving roles
  • Provides spiritual leadership and mentorship to worship team members
  • Collaborates with church leadership to align worship with sermon themes
  • Leads the worship leadership team in selecting and arranging appropriate music for worship and events
  • Develops and manages the Worship Ministry department budget and resources
  • Participate in staff meetings and other church duties

Serves the Support Staff:

  • Communicates and advocates for the needs of the Worship Ministry Department to other staff and church leaders
  • Oversees and develops Worship Ministry and Production staff, which currently includes a full-time Production Director and a full-time Administrative Assistant
  • Assists in any interdepartmental projects as needed 

Serves the Congregation:

  • Organizes and schedules team members, leads, rehearsals, and leads worship services to ensure a cohesive worship experience
  • Develop and implement strategies for congregational engagement in worship
  • Provides leadership to the Production Director in the implementation of technology to enhance the worship experience, including audio, lights, and multimedia

Education and experience

  • Bachelor’s degree (preferred in ministry area)
  • A minimum of 5-7 years of pastoral experience in a local church and preferably in leading a worship ministry in a church of comparable size.

Personal characteristics and qualifications

  • Participates as a member of the Elder Council
  • Expected to live an exemplary life modeling the call, character, and competencies of a follower of Jesus Christ
  • Expected to be involved in the overall life of the church body by actively participating in Life Groups and other ministry-wide events and functions
  • Ability to read and arrange music and has a healthy knowledge of production technologies in worship
  • Is committed to excellence in the development, implementation, and execution of the Worship Ministry 
  • Preferred experience in leading a Worship Ministry program in a church of comparable size
  • Strong musical skills, both instrumental and vocal
  • Ability to lead the congregation with an instrument
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills with the ability to manage time and resources efficiently 
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills
  • Has strong computer and administrative skills for handling emails, coordinating events, organizing, brainstorming, and managing a budget
  • Demonstrates a high level of professionalism in dealing with confidential and sensitive issues and can handle complaints and problems with tact, patience, and diplomacy
  • Demonstrates an enthusiastic, flexible, and willing spirit to work within constantly changing priorities
  • Is a passionate, dedicated, and contributing member of the Pastoral Staff Team 
  • Participates as needed or requested in the development and implementation of the overall church ministry
