About the Senior Pastor

The Senior Pastor of Timberline Church will provide spiritual and pastoral leadership to the congregation and to the staff. The Senior Pastor serves as the visionary leader of the congregation and helps it to accomplish God’s purposes through preaching, teaching, shepherding, training, developing leaders, and by example. The Senior Pastor must have an ongoing close relationship with the Holy Spirit, regularly demonstrated in his vibrant, authentic ministry motivated by love for Christ. He must be effectively and actively involved in reaching the mission and vision of Timberline Church. This position requires not only spiritual leadership but also exceptional organizational and managerial skills to effectively oversee various ministries. The Senior Pastor must make pivotal decisions for what is best for the church.

The Senior Pastor’s responsibilities include:

Spiritual Leadership

  • Provide spiritual leadership and guidance to staff and congregation through preaching, teaching, and pastoral care.
  • Lead the Teaching Team in developing and implementing engaging and relevant teaching strategies for all age groups and venues with particular emphasis on the Weekend Teaching experience.
  • Cultivate a spiritual environment that fosters growth and discipleship within the church.
  • Lead worship services and participate in other church events as needed.

Vision Casting & Strategic Planning

  • Communicate a compelling vision for the church and inspire others to embrace it.
  • Develop and implement strategic plans to achieve the church’s mission and goals.
  • Lead the church in adapting to changing needs and opportunities.
  • Empower the church’s numerous pastors and ministry directors to implement a shared vision in each of their various ministry arms of the church, providing the necessary mentorship and support.

Ministry Oversight

  • Provide oversight and support to all ministries within the church, including but not limited to: Youth, Children, Adult, Music, Outreach, and Missions.
  • Collaborate with ministry leaders to develop and implement effective strategies for reaching and serving the community.

Leadership Development

  • Mentor and develop pastors and staff members, providing guidance, coaching, and opportunities for growth.
  • Lead and facilitate leadership development programs for staff and volunteers.
  • Empower and equip leaders at all levels to effectively fulfill their roles.

Team Leadership

  • Lead and facilitate weekly meetings with the Executive Pastor and other key leaders.
  • Lead the Deacon Team, including monthly meetings, retreats, and the development of a strong team culture.
  • Lead the Pastoral Team, fostering collaboration, accountability, and healthy relationships.
  • Oversee the evaluation and salary processes for all staff members, ensuring fair and equitable compensation.
  • Lead annual church business meeting.

Church Operations

  • Oversee the church’s financial health, including budget development, goal setting, property and development decisions, etc., assigning qualified personnel and overseeing all aspects.
  • Ensure the church operates efficiently and effectively by establishing and maintaining healthy structures and processes.

Community Engagement

  • Actively engage in the community through outreach and service initiatives.
  • Build relationships with community leaders and organizations.

Conflict Resolution

  • Serve as a resource for conflict resolution within the church, providing guidance and support as needed.

Personal Example

  • Lead by example in all aspects of ministry, demonstrating a life of integrity, humility, and service.

What you bring

The following describes many of the characteristics of the ideal candidate for the Senior Pastor:

Education and experience

  • An Undergraduate degree (or equivalent and demonstrated educational background) is required. 
  • A seminary degree (Masters or higher) is preferred but not required. 
  • A minimum of 10 years experience in leading at a high level in a church of more than 1000 (weekly adult attendance).
  • Multisite experience is strongly preferred. 

Knowledge, skills, and abilities

Proven ability to teach effective Biblical messages that connect with people of all stages of their spiritual journey. 

  • Strong leadership and organizational  development skills 

Personal characteristics and qualifications

  • A deep commitment to Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior
  • Must have the ability to communicate effectively, demonstrating the ability to build rapport, and develop strong relationships and unity
  • An authentic and humble leader who leads through relationship rather than positional authority. 
  • Sense of humor matching Timberline’s light-hearted spirit and oft-repeated phrase “Fun church, serious mission”
  • Exceptional time management skills
  • Exhibit the ability of being a strong listener with the ability to diffuse tense situations with tact and diplomacy while maintaining strict confidentiality and integrity.
