Meet Journey Church
Journey Church was birthed out of a passion to see Charleston, SC and its people redeemed and in a relationship with Jesus Christ. Twelve adults and eight children partnered with the Journey Church to plant this church that is dedicated to scattering missionaries across the city and planting more churches throughout the world.
Through growth, relocations, and many more changes have come new and exciting challenges. But what the church has never turned away from is their mission: that they would make sure that every man, woman, and child would have multiple opportunities to see, hear, and respond to the gospel of Jesus Christ. Journey Church strives to be a church that equips and sends missionary disciples all across their city, sees families redeemed, and sees churches planted.
Opportunity
Journey Church was missing an important piece of their team – a person who would spearhead discipleship for the church. Journey Church began a search to find a Spiritual Formation Pastor to complete their Lead Team, along with their Lead Pastor and Director of Operations.
Once placed, the Spiritual Formation Pastor would develop a holistic journey for followers of Jesus. They would carry out the vision and mission of Journey Church through praying and modeling Jesus’ way. This person would work closely with the lead pastor, elders, and staff to innovate and develop ministries that are scalable and sustainable to their growing church.
Filling this role was crucial for Journey Church’s ability to carry out its mission within and beyond its church community.
Solution
Not long ago, Journey Church was in the midst of another important search. In 2021, they partnered with Vanderbloemen to find their Lead Pastor, Chris Fowler, who has led the church since then. Remembering their success, Chris reached out to Vanderbloemen to build out their staff with the Spiritual Formation Pastor role.
Journey Church’s search team was able to partner with the same Executive Search Consultant they had worked with in 2021, Brian Dunks. Brian learned all there was to know about the Spiritual Formation Pastor role at Journey Church and built a profile for who the church was looking for.
The ideal candidate they hoped to find would have some relevant experience in spiritual formation ministries, a Master of Divinity degree, and a myriad of strengths including communication and leadership. They needed someone with the right experience and the right servant’s heart to join the team at Journey Church as a capable, humble leader.
With a polished profile ready, the Vanderbloemen team got busy sifting through applications, interviewing, and assembling the first round of candidates to present to Journey Church. Thankfully, the search ended there, because within the first slate was Journey’s ideal candidate.
Result
Nathan Campbell previously came from a minister role in Dallas before making the move to Ladson, SC to join the Journey Church. His experience discipling others through previous roles and his education including a Master of Divinity degree from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary made him stand out among the applicants, even on paper. He also had unique experience as a Bible Study curriculum writer. Journey Church’s search team soon learned that Nathan was also a strong match in theology and possessed a clear heart for discipleship, signaling that the search was over.

Nathan made a smooth transition from Texas to South Carolina, completing the team at Journey Church and allowing them to fully focus their team’s efforts toward fulfilling their mission.
