The Role: Director of Development
Meet Peninsula Rescue Mission:
The Peninsula Rescue Mission is an evangelical Christian ministry intent on serving the poor and needy, providing shelter and services for the homeless, and sharing the love of Christ with everyone who comes our way. The current facility in downtown Newport News provides food services, chapel services, and a resident capacity of 40 men. In 2025, a home for unaccompanied women will be opened.
About the Director of Development:
The Director of Development (DoD) is responsible for all fundraising and income development of the Peninsula Rescue Mission (PRM). This will be accomplished by creatively engaging the community to cultivate the involvement necessary to sustain and advance the ministries of PRM.
The Director of Development Responsibilities Include:

Submit the annual fundraising and income development goals to the CEO.

The DoD will oversee PRM’s fundraising in the following ways:

Acquiring new donors by engaging individuals, churches, businesses, community groups, and foundations through direct mail, media advertising, events, face-to-face group meetings, and individual interactions.

Developing financial gifts from those who are currently involved with PRM in non-financial ways

Creating and implementing the development budget and strategy for PRM to achieve the PRM fundraising goals

The DoD will produce and submit an annual development budget that will be used to achieve the PRM fundraising goals.

The DoD will regularly report to the PRM CEO on fundraising progress while working to stay within the development budget.

The DoD will produce an annual development strategy that shows how fundraising and other development goals will be met.

The DoD will oversee the development team, including hiring, supervising, training, and all other tasks necessary to reach PRM’s fundraising goals.

Research and engage outside vendors (direct mail companies, advertising agencies, etc.) within the approved development budget to help with fundraising efforts.

Increase awareness of the PRM through presentations to local churches, corporate organizations, and community groups.

Strengthen existing donor relationships through tours, events, mailings, and personal contacts that encourage increased contributions to PRM.

Cultivate major gifts, including estate planning, grants, and foundations

Use PRM’s donor software to measure giving demographics and donor trends

Other duties as assigned
What You Bring:
The following describes many of the characteristics of the ideal candidate for the Director of Development:
Education & Experience

A bachelor's degree in nonprofit management or a related field is strongly preferred.

A minimum of 5 years of experience in nonprofit fundraising is strongly preferred.

Possesses a strong desire to use business and fundraising skills to advance PRM’s gospel ministries

Shows a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively

Excellent verbal and written communication skills

What it's Like to Live in Newport News, VA:
Peninsula Rescue Mission is located in downtown Newport News (NN), VA. The most striking feature of the downtown NN is the Newport News Shipyard. The shipyard employs over 25,000 employees and builds and overhauls aircraft carriers for the US Navy. In and near NN are military bases of all the armed services. Because of this, the military, defense department, and shipbuilding make up a large portion of the working population in our area. The greatest feature of our area is its history. NN makes up a large portion of the Virginia Peninsula. To the north is the York River, to the south is the James River, and to the east is the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean. There is so much American history to be found in Yorktown, Jamestown, and nearby Williamsburg. We are also about 45 minutes from Virginia Beach and about 2 hours from the Outer Banks in North Carolina. Newport News is about 3 hours from the Shenandoah mountains in the western part of the state and 3 hours from Washington, DC.
